In this review we will take a closer look at the newest pop-up title engineered by David Hawcock. We love the work of David Hawcock who already created several pop-up classics like the Body in a Book Pop-up and his Leonardo Da Vinci books. This book is also about Leonardo but this time together with Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael. But you should know, this isn’t a pop-up book about Italian artists from the Renaissance. This book is about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Who hasn’t grown up with the four heroes in a half-shell? The Ninja Turtles recently made a comeback in the cinema’s and at Nickelodeon in 2012 with an animated series. This pop-up book, published by Insight Editions and Nickelodeon, is another great example of how powerful comic pop-up’s can be. David Hawcock, who already created some unique comic pop-up books (Frankenstein and Dracula), did a great job engineering dynamic pop-up’s from Claudio Sciarrone’s stunning artwork.

Engineering

This Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pop-up book contains five spreads. The first four spreads are big pop-ups of all four Ninja Turtles. The fifth spread called The Team is a “Grand finale” pop-up with all the characters in action on the streets of New York city. Each spread that contains a big Ninja Turtle looks like a real 3D action figure popping out. The paper animation techniques that are used for the main pop-ups, work great with the artwork. There’s a lot of action going on in this book. Two of our favorite pop-ups are the Michelangelo and Raphael spreads. The Michelangelo spread shows a nice rotating paper technique that fits the artwork perfectly. The Raphael spread really jumps out of the page! The perspective used in the illustrations contributes to a unique pop-up effect. The feet, arms, legs, heads, shields and weapons all work together to create depth and result in an impressive 3D Ninja Turtle unfolding in front of you.

Artwork

The illustrations of Claudio Sciarrone are impressive, razor sharp, colorful and strong. Sciarrone, who’s working at Disney Italy as an illustrator, managed to give this book a classic comic style combined with a fresh and dynamic look. It does feel a bit like the classic Turtles which makes it a must have for fans of all ages. Not just the characters but also the backgrounds are true pieces of comic art and make every spread worth it to study for details.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Pop-up Book is already a classic collectable for fans of the TMNT franchise and the work of David Hawcock. This affordable mid-range priced pop-up book is also a perfect gift for birthdays. Every kid, and probably most adults from the 90’s, will enjoy this neat pop-up version of the Ninja Turtles. We sure did!

Another new pop-up title created by David Hawcock is the Leonardo Da Vinci’s Remarkable Machines pop-up book and the Leonardo Da Vinci Robot pop-up.
