This is our very first collector interview! A new category on our website that shares pop-up book collections with other fans. We are very exited about this new addition on our website because we think it’s very useful to connect fans with fans worldwide.

Yeray Pérez is a pop-up book collector and freelance paper engineer living in Barcelona. Pérez also has one published book and there’s another one coming. Most of his work had been for smaller businesses. You can see some of his pop-ups at the website carbonara.es and his @minicarbonara Instagram account.

The interview

BPUB – What’s the first pop-up book you bought?
YP – I had a few pop-up books when I was a kid (some I still keep) but the first I got myself was Robert Sabuda’s Alice in Wonderland.

BPUB – Who’s your favorite pop-up book author or paper engineer?
YP – The duo Sabuda-Reinhart is an easy choice, but my personal favourite is Corina Fletcher. I also love the work of Rigaud and Boisrobert, authors of Popville or Océano.

BPUB – How many books are there in your collection?
YP – This question actually made me go and count them fit the first time! Right now I have 86 pop-up books, but there’s some on my radar for Christmas…

BPUB – What book is missing or will be the first one you’ll order next?
YP – I’m eager to see Reinhart’s Disney Princesses that’s out somewhat recently. I got to see a hand made prototype back in spring and have been waiting to have it ever since.

BPUB – If you could choose a subject for a new pop-up book by your favorite author, what will it be?
YP – Difficult question! I’d fall in love with any decent pop-up book about Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. Or possibly Lord of the Rings; funny there isn’t like four different books on that.

BPUB – Is there anything else you would like to share with other pop-up book fans?
YP – There’s a refreshing trend with crowdfunded pop-up books making it to market without big publishers dictating content or target audience, which has allowed for new themes to reach this medium. Look for Poposition Press on the net, for example. They’re making books on art, hip hop and whatnot. Check them out.

BPUB – What’s your favorite book in your collection and why?
YP – The jewel of my collection is a huge French pop-up on love called Jeux T’aime. Every scene is a different style, it looks gorgeous and it’s rare enough that I don’t see it every other time I’m on a book shop.

BPUB – What do you think of bestpopupbooks.com?
YP – Great! I’m subscribed to your channel ever since I knew about it, just as I follow on Instagram and Twitter.

Thank you Yeray for sharing your impressive pop-up book collection with us and congratulations being the first Pop-up book collector of the month!
